HISTORY OF FALAS

Our Origins
The idea of a unified continental body for African law students emerged between 2019 andearly 2020 through discussions among student leaders active in national and international lawstudent associations. These engagements revealed the absence of a coordinated, representativepan-African structure for law students, despite similar platforms existing in other regions ofthe world. Motivated by this gap, a group of African student leaders began exploring thecreation of a continental body that would foster cooperation, shared learning, and collectiveadvocacy among law students across Africa.

From Idea to Institution (2020)
In 2020, a series of consultations and working meetings, most notably in Gwarimpa, Abujamarked a transition from conceptual discussions to concrete institutional planning. A coreworking group coordinated outreach, organizational design, and early governance planning, with decisions taken collectively to ensure inclusivity and continental representation. Duringthis phase, the name Federation of African Law Students (FALAS) was adopted, alongsidepreliminary objectives, branding, and governance ideas. A continental outreach initiative waslaunched through a formal clarion call inviting law student leaders from across Africa toparticipate in the formation of the Federation.

Founding of FALAS
On 14 August 2020, representatives of law students from fourteen African countries formallyexecuted a founding accord establishing FALAS. This milestone marked the official birth ofthe Federation as a continental platform dedicated to unity, collaboration, and advancementwithin Africa’s legal education space. The founding structure reflected a deliberatecommitment to Pan-Africanism, with founding members drawn from diverse regions of thecontinent

Governance and Democratic DevelopmentFollowing its establishment, an interim executive council was constituted to consolidate theFederation’s institutional framework. The council was tasked with finalizing the charter, developing governance mechanisms, and preparing the Federation for democratic elections.Despite early institutional challenges, FALAS gained recognition and goodwill from keystakeholders within Africa’s legal community, strengthening its legitimacy and laying thegroundwork for sustainable growth. The Federation subsequently conducted its firstdemocratic elections in 2021, ushering in an elected leadership and marking a transition fromthe pioneering administration.

Conferences and Continental Engagement
FALAS’s first annual international conference, held in Ghana, represented a major milestonein its institutional development. Originally conceived as a regional gathering, the conferencewas expanded to reflect the Federation’s continental mandate, bringing together law studentsfrom across Africa. Since then, FALAS has institutionalized annual conferences and forumshosted in different African countries (South Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia at theAfrican Union Headquarters), serving as platforms for dialogue on law, leadership, governance, and Africa’s future.

Growth and Impact
Over the years, FALAS has expanded its membership to include law students from more thanforty-four (44) African countries. Through national and regional chapters, leadership programs, conferences, and partnerships, the Federation has strengthened cross-border collaboration andcontributed to conversations on legal reform, education, and youth leadership. Successiveadministrations have built on the Federation’s foundations by enhancing internal structures, deepening institutional partnerships, and increasing FALAS’s visibility within continental andglobal legal spaces. Today, FALAS stands as one of Africa’s leading student-led legalorganizations. It continues to serve as a platform for mentorship, leadership development, advocacy, and Pan-African cooperation among law students.
